The University of Plymouth has a zero tolerance policy for discrimination to its staff and students. This includes age, race and sexuality! So no-matter what happens during your time here at Uni there will always be this big brother on your side!

There are a number of ways in which the Uni provide service and support for you; the LGB Officer is a student elected to stand office once a year and is there as your representative within the Uni and Student Union. Also we have the first ever student Sexuality Line in the United Kingdom based here in Plymouth – this is a confidential listening service run by students for students.

The LGB Officer for this year is Carl Hillyar, he works as part of the Student Welfare section in the SU. He is a really nice guy and is always happy to give advice or even go for a cuppa char! For anything from coming out, being discriminated against or even sexual health concerns your LGB officer would be a good first port of call.

If he doesn’t know the answer directly he is more than likely to know a man (or woman) who does. As LGB Officer he attends specific training seminars organised by the NUS and regularly liases with many local and national gay organisations.

Carl can usually be found skulking around the Union in the Non-Sabbs office (Non-Sabbs means that they don’t get paid for what they do - they do it out of love for you guys… honestly!). However if he is not there he can either be contacted through his pigeonhole (at reception) or via his email:

Talking things through, or even just saying them aloud can often be great relief for any built up anxiety or confusion you may have, Sexuality Line allows you to do just that. If you don’t think that you are ready to ‘actually’ speak to someone face to face then this gives you the ideal opportunity to speak about whatever is on your mind without fear of judgement and in complete confidence… you don’t even have to give your name.

Sexuality Line is run in association with Nightline and provides a confidential listening and information service during term time for students, and also provides a place to pick up some free condoms should you ever get caught short!

Sexuality Line is run every Sunday from 8pm until 8am Monday morning and can be called on;
